SDS and accommodations

The University of San Francisco is committed to providing equal access to students with disabilities. If you are a student with a disability, or if you think you may have a disability, please contact Student Disability Services (SDS) at 415 422-2613, to speak with a disability specialist (please note all communication with SDS is private and confidential). If you are eligible for accommodations, please request that your accommodation letter be sent to me as soon as possible (students are encouraged to contact SDS at the beginning of the semester), as accommodations are not retroactive. Once I have been notified by SDS of your accommodations we can discuss your accommodations and ensure your access to this class or clinical setting. For more information please visit the SDS website https://www.usfca.edu/student-disability-services.

Mandatory reporting

As a university employee, I am mandated to report any cases of gender-based discrimination or harassment (including sexual assault, sexual harassment, and gender-based harassment) that any student shares with me to the USF Title IX Office, even if the student does not want the incident reported. I am happy to speak with you about these issues, but please know there are limits to the confidentiality that you can expect. If you have questions about this policy, wish to report something, or to speak with someone about issues related to gender-based discrimination or violence on campus, please contact the Title IX office at (415) 422-2823 or the Dean of Students Office at 415-422-5330. Alternatively, anonymous online reports can be made via Callisto https://usfca.callistocampus.org/

Additional resources are available at: https://myusf.usfca.edu/caps/sexual-assault-reporting If you are in the midst of an emergency, please call USF Public Safety immediately by dialing 2-9-1-1.

Academic Honesty

All students are expected to know and adhere to the University's Honor Code. You can find the full text of the code online at myusf.usfca.edu/fogcutter

I follow USF’s policy on plagiarism. In the most general terms, plagiarism is presenting – intentionally or unintentionally - someone else’s words or ideas as your own without giving credit to the original author.  Material can be plagiarized from the internet as well as from books, journals, newspapers, or any other source. It is also a violation of the plagiarism policy to buy or otherwise obtain from another student or source pre-written papers which you then submit for credit. All words and ideas taken from other sources must either be in “quotes” if you are lifting the text verbatim, or cited with a footnote or (parenthetically) in the text if you are paraphrasing or borrowing an idea, even if you use your own words. If it is discovered that any submitted material has been plagiarized the student involved may receive a failing grade on the assignment or in the course, and a referral will be made to the Dean and the Committee of Student Academic Honesty. A letter will also be sent to the Associate Dean for Student Academic Services, and will remain in your file for two years after you graduate, after which you may petition for its removal.

Citations

An important part of avoiding accidental plagiarism is carefully and consistently citing any ideas or quotations in your writing that are borrowed from other authors, including those online. I am most familiar personally with the Chicago (author date) format, but you can use any recognized academic citation system as long as you do so accurately and consistently.

Life Challenges

Please do speak to me this semester if you are struggling personally or academically. Life challenges can have a big impact on your ability to engage with and be successful in your classes. If I am aware of any difficulties, then we can work together to help you be as successful as possible in this class. There is also a range of campus services that may be of help (see the bottom of the syllabus).

Counselling and Psychological Services
